    SWAMP THING: DCFS #5
    Written by: Bill K'tepi

Deep in the Green, Hank Abelard and Adam Hargrove were screaming. Both of them had faded into afterthoughts pinned like butterflies somewhere in the hindbrain of the Elemental of Earth.

Deep in the Green, the Elemental walked without a body, testing out his new form -- getting used to himself. He was both of them and neither. He was more and less. He was ... something new.

Deep in the Green, the voices of the Parliament of Trees had fallen silent for the first time in Earth's memory. They had nothing to say. They were dead. Brother Power had eaten them.

Deep in the Green, Brother Power laughed gleefully. What had started as a ragdoll in Hippieland and been resurrected as an avatar of the Red was now an ambassador of sorts -- a splotch of crimson amidst the verdant. The memory of Hank Abelard had called out to him, and he had answered. He had found food -- power for the Red, tasty minds eons-old.

Brother Power was nearly giddy as the power of the Parliament rushed through him and into the Red.

Red and Green spilled into each other, overlapping ...

It was the same as before.

The array of nanite image reference transmitters hovered around as she stepped from her limo. One graciously formed foot after another carried her further, the heels of her shoes adding to the clicking of hundreds of holo cubes, processing all the information provided from the array floating in the air. A detailed holopicture was then written to the internal drive, capturing the moment forever in binary steams of data.

The flood of fans cheering from behind small walls of forcefields brought in by the row of blue uniformed protectors forcing the throng back was meant to bring a smile to her digital feature. Algorithms failed to find warmth in the shouted greetings and accolades. Failsafe were ran as her skin tightened none the less, never appearing forced while being just that.

She performed the same motions, as she had not 16 hours ago in the Cuban Islands. Step after step, turn, wave, smile, and wink. Step after step, turn, wave, smile, and wink. Same routine as before.

    It was always the same.

    STARMAN: DCFS #5

    Weeks passed

    Seasons progress.

Opal moves on. Today is mid June 2150. Today, City representative Heydrich has called a press conference for what the press release refers to as a new start for Opal City.

Captain Sara Hambly stood to one side of the dais. The news teams were setting up in front of her and she could not avoid hearing the banter between rivals, but her mind was elsewhere. Just over her shoulder she caught a glimpse of Alex Dare.

Alex Dare was smiling sweetly at her. His red hair seemed to be getting longer, less immaculate than when they had first met. There was no flashiness to his clothing. The suit was smart, well cut, but not overly ostentatious. "So, Captain, what do you make of this?" he asked.

"Now that would be telling, Mr Dare."

"So you have no idea what's going on either?"

"Now that would be telling, Mr Dare."

"I'll take that as a no then. Might I say how lovely you look today."

Sara turned to him. "So now the flirting starts eh?" They stood considering each other. Alex allowed his lips to twitch.

Onto the platform stepped the smartly dressed form of Inquisitor Heydrich. He walked slowly, purposefully to the podium. Hands placed either side of the lectern he began. "Welcome ladies and gentlemen. As you are all acutely aware Mediate and Opal City have had a happy co-existence. Today the City is proud to offer a new hero to serve this city in honour of that special relationship." He paused as murmurs ran through the crowd and the hover cams began to turn skyward. Floating down dressed in a dark green and red jump suit was a shaven headed coloured man. The man's face was not masked, but there seemed to be a slight distortion to it as one looked at it. He moved to hover behind Heydrich.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you Opal City's newest hero - Gryphon."

METROPOLITAN: DCFS "Welcome to my City"

Not one single thing. There is not one thing I can point out to you as an example. There is no true way to define the focal point of my rage.

On the flip side, however, the opposite is true. There isn't one facet of the City I can use to illustrate why I love it as I do.

This has always been my home, these streets the very ones I stomped around within my teen years. The days when bashing in ones skull was the only way to prove your point. True, that is still the way today, but then there weren't any worries regarding insurance against provoked slayings. There seemed to be less red tape back then.

This is my City. These are the reasons I love and hate it, all in the same breath.

    Walk with me.
