The Smithenson Letter, Artifice: Legacies #1
Jeremiah Christian Smithenson stood behind his mahogany desk, hands flat atop it. His slender, muscular arms supported him as he leaned forward and smiled. He'd not said a word since the three men came in and introductions shuffled past. He knew why they were there, each one of the three dressed their part. The man to the far left wore a standard issue government suit, navy blue with white shirt and red tie. Smithenson noted it was tailor made by the stylistic cut of the seams, which placed the overly slim man in the higher echelons of whatever corner of the alphabet he worked for. The man seated next to him appeared ill at ease. Smithenson wasn't sure if that was due to the heavily starched Army dress uniform the Major wore or if it was his present surroundings. The Major's narrow hazel eyes never stopped moving, first slowly around the office, then crossing the window looking out over the street, then darting back to do it all again. The third man stood, close to the door. He, like Smithenson, had said nothing since entering with his two associates. He simply stood there, his arms crossed in front of him, red-gloved hands hidden behind his trademark red, white, and blue shield.
