Heroes #3 by Jesse Ritz The chase continued.
Through the woods, across streams, even a 45 second sprint through a small clearing that ended with the men panting but still pushing on, and the boy momentarily out of visible range.
Twice they crossed streams that were longer than jumping distance. The boy was able to deftly leap from stones and logs, but the men had to wade through. Throughout the hunt, that seemed to be a recurring theme⦠they were running a path that afforded every advantage to the prey.
But they never lost him. They had not been in striking distance since the original triangle-trap, but they were never far behind that mark.
Finally, the chase seemed to be at its close. The child stopped by a thick row of trees, took his pack off, and threw it through the small gap. He turned then, and yanked a small hunting knife out of his pocket, ready to confront his attackers.
Running on Adrenaline, the closest pursuer dived witlessly towards the child, thinking no more fitting end than to bring his oh-so-annoying quarry down hard and then treat himself to a meal.
The child did not flinch.
